Yesterday was Friday, 8/10. It had all the hallmarks of a Day From Hell, but didn't turn out too bad. In fact, there were many good things to say about it, so I'll say a few.
I didn't go to the office; instead, a bunch of us from the embattled project at work which is way behind its schedule met at the new Product Manager's home. Yes, home. His pregnant wife and two pre-school kids and dog were elsewhere, and he cleaned up his own home and rearranged his living room to turn it into a conference room with couches. He also planned on food for the whole day, accommodating two vegetarians in the process.
His ground rules included "No blaming", and he kept the focus on "Where do we go from here". Yes, there were several painful modifications to the program, and several real concerns which were glossed over, but by the end of the (mentally grueling) day, we had a real plan in place: fuzzy in the long-term, but concrete in the short term for things which we should have had months ago but everyone acknowledges that we absolutely need now. Again, no blaming. Just get it now.
I'm impressed. I'll be even more impressed when we pull this off. I foresee some exhaustion in my future, but not the futile kind.
For futility, the Red Sox got past one of the toughest pitchers in the majors, pounced on the Orioles' bull-pen, and then shiny new Red Sox acquisition Eric Gagne managed to hand the O's four runs before being yanked. We lost in the bottom of the ninth. Feh. I hope that the Sox get their act together in time for the game
donnad is there to see.
