Back in 1980, when the Republicans nominated Ronald Reagan, I left the party. It was a hard decision; I had worked hard on the Gerald Ford campaign four years earlier, manning phone banks and driving elderly voters to the polls. But thanks to Reagan, the GOP shed its commitment to privacy and hijacked the abortion issue from the Democrats. That, and the neoconservative yammerheads that made up most of his cabinet were just plain frightening.

Now, conservative columnist Andrew Sullivan of the Atlantic explains why he is disassociating himself from "the conservative movement", even tho he (as I) truly is a conservative.

If you want to understand me and my political homelessness, or if you want to understand that there are indeed intellectual conservatives who cannot make themselves heard, please read this. It isn't all that long, and you won't want to throw things at your monitor. I promise.
